What is Professional mean for Speedmaster Professional collection?



Back to early of 60s when NASA was working on space experimental mission name "Mercury" and starting a new project called "GEMINI" -- send the astronauts out of the spaceship -- for some experimental in the space. While selected watches for operation need to be rugged enough to withstand in various environments such as atmospheric pressure, vacuum and low temperature. NASA considered many brands and tested in various environments and the only one that passed all testing was Omega Speedmaster. In 1965, Edward White, NASA's astronaut, wore Omega Speedmaster in mission GEMINI 4 for stopwatch recording during swimming in the space. In 1966, Omega added "PROFESSIONAL" after Speedmaster on the dial to celebrated as the watches of NASA's space experimental project.

Is there anybody don't know Omega?




When talking about Omega, folks say yeah because it is an old branded. Behind the success of every Omega time piece is quality. Being the leader of the industry, Omega have to pass many testing. In 1950, accuracy of time indication and stopwatch feature are the keys competition of the era. Many brands try to improve the quality and invented new mechanism for their own watches to qualified by organization and federal institute of Switzerland. Omega was broke the record of accuracy in many events. In 1969, once again that Omega remarked as the first watches which reached the Moon in human history.





Omega became famous and gained a large sale number. The first Speedmaster collection, so called Moon Watch, is CK2918 manufactured in 1957 then another collections kept launched to the market. But most of them are the same design concept and performance such as stopwatch and time indication accuracy. Last year, Omega launched the latest collection, Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 35th Anniversary to celebrated the 35th anniversary of Apollo-Soyuz Test project with a limited number of 1,975 watches.
